Malleta is a type of combination wire rope designed to fulfil a specific function of bottom trawl fishing. It is most often used for sweeps but can also be used for the lower bridles. It is available in both right hand and left hand lay.

Because of its fibre component the Malleta is a product with lower density than chain & steel wire. It can be towed using lower RPM for the same tow speed resulting in fuel savings.

Description

Unlike chain and wire, the Malleta is able to more easily slide over the seabed without penetrating into it. When the Malleta is working, the fibre covering protects the wire rope strand inside which extends the life of the sweeps. The Malleta lasts up to 3 times longer than wire.

You can expect improved catch rates by using Malleta in place of chain and wire.

The type and weight per metre of the Malleta has been determined to best suit the fishing ground type, traditions and vessel types in New Zealand. It is being used successfully by fishing vessels from the Cape Reinga to Bluff.
